About the Alabama Flight Crew:

To expand STEM learning experiences to underserved girls, the Alabama Expanded Learning Alliance (AELA) is excited to announce the creation of the Alabama Fight Crew. Ten girls (2 from each of AELA’s 5 Regional Community Hubs) ages 11-15 will have the opportunity to engage in a series of monthly virtual out of school time learning sessions designed to introduce them to a variety of STEM careers and role models.

The monthly virtual meetings will be facilitated by Dr. Adrienne Starks, an Alabama Scientist and CEO of STREAM Innovations. Dr. Starks present content based on the Access to STEM: A Framework document created by the National Girls Collaborative group.

The virtual meetings will include:

• Three sessions where participants will focus on (a) who they are, (b) women in STEM and (c) where they might FIT in the STEM field.

• Two hands-on sessions using materials that will be mailed out in advance.

The Alabama MGM Flight Crew will also be presented at the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA) Annual Conference where they will deliver messaging that promotes the importance of out-of-school time learning experiences and the need for more women in STEM fields.

Selected participants will:

• Participate in virtual monthly STEM activities and discussions

• Learn about women in STEM and STEM careers

• Travel to the annual Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA) Conference

  • Participate on a Youth Voice Panel

  • Participate in a STEM focused Field Trip

• Complete a capstone project
