The Alabama Expanded Learning Alliance (AELA) is recruiting afterschool programs to participate in a new civics-focused enrichment opportunity developed in partnership with Flags of Valor. Alabama has been selected to lead the national pilot, making this an exciting opportunity for programs across the state.

Through this partnership, participating programs will receive a Civics Activity Guide along with free individual American flag-building kits. These hands-on kits allow students to construct their own American flag while learning the meaning behind its colors, symbols, and key elements of America’s history and democratic foundations.
This initiative also provides a powerful service-learning opportunity. Students can create their flags and then share them with veterans in their local communities, deliver them during visits to nursing homes, or participate in other acts of appreciation that honor those who have served our country.
With the upcoming celebration of America’s 250th birthday, this is the perfect moment to launch a project that strengthens civic understanding, encourages community engagement, and gives students a meaningful way to connect with America’s history and the individuals who helped shape it.
