What is a Teen Science Cafe'?
Teen Science Cafés are free, out-of-school programs where teens and STEM experts connect through conversations, interactive presentations, and hands-on activities that explore exciting science topics in depth.
Each Café is unique to its community and led by teens, for teens, with the guidance of an adult leader. No prior STEM experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.
About the Scientists
Scientists are carefully selected and coached to communicate effectively with teens. They focus on storytelling, big ideas, and real-world impact—using clear, engaging visuals instead of jargon. While some presenters are natural storytellers, most benefit from guidance to create a conversational, interactive experience. Once a presenter is chosen, they receive an invitation and follow-up details including event dates, locations, and a Presenter Guide outlining best practices for engaging teen audiences.
Building Leaders
Teen Science Cafés thrive on teen leadership. Teen Leadership Teams run every part of the program, while adult leaders provide guidance behind the scenes. This structure gives teens ownership, builds their confidence, and fuels creativity. Regular meetings with adult leaders help teens reflect on past events, plan future ones, and strengthen teamwork and purpose.
